It also was accepted and understood in the last half of the 19th century that kids (girls especially) would develop intensely passionate same-sex emotional and romantic relationships while away at single sex schools or colleges. Most of them weren’t physically sexual, because it was usually a ‘senpai/kohai’-type system where the object of affection was an older student or a teacher, but check out how one former student described it:

“Girls between the ages of fourteen and eighteen at college or girls’ schools often fall in love with the same sex. This is not friendship. The loved one is older, more advanced, more charming or beautiful. When I was a freshman in college I knew at least thirty girls who were in love with a senior. Some sought her because it was the fashion, but I knew that my own homage and that of many others was sincere and passionate. I loved her because she was brilliant and utterly indifferent to the love shown her. She was not pretty, though at the time we thought her beautiful. One of her adorers, on being slighted, was ill for two weeks. On her return she was speaking to me when the object of our adoration came into the room. The shock was too great, and she fainted. When I reached the senior year I was the recipient of languishing glances, original verses, and passionate letters written at midnight and three in the morning.”

And boys had the same kind of system! Even Abraham Lincoln had a male friend from childhood that he shared a bed with for years and kept frequent correspondence with for most of his life.

Unfortunately, as the suffrage movement picked up, critics stigmatized the homoromantic friendships of women in an attempt to debase and show the dangers of women’s suffrage, since most of the suffragettes were once students of the single sex schools and colleges. For boys, pressure from parents to make sure their children were being properly raised in line with gender roles (gender and sexuality were often conflated until much later) and laws against male homosexual behavior led boys’ school administrators to try and stamp out these types of relationships.

One has to keep in mind though that all of this existed separate from our modern understanding of homosexuality and gender identity. Almost all of these students were still expected to marry heterosexually, and for the time period that this was tolerated it was seen as an intermediate phase between childhood and mature heterosexuality. But, because female teachers were often required by law to be unmarried, many women subverted that expectation by entering education!

NYPD in Elementary

I know this is probably hoping for too much but..

In Elementary, I wish the NYPD’s stop and frisk policies,as well as their racist tendencies were explored. I wish that Detective Bell had his own personal demons he was battling while enforcing a system that unjustly imprisons people that look like him, like his brother. And his feelings on it were shown on more than just one episode or arc.

I wish Alfredo gave his own outside viewpoint on the police force, and engaged with Sherlock on it, and talked with him about how his work affected him.

I wish Watson was able to see it, but had her own reservations, and fears due to her own privileges.

The NYPD is shown as almost pure in its racial dynamics on the show, whereas you look outside a NYC window on any given day and you know that is not the truth.
